Thu, Nov 29: Fly to Savannah, Georgia. Tour the Owens-Thomas House, which has one of the only intact urban slave quarters in America and is Savannah’s most popular historic home. Learn the personal stories of the families that lived there, and through them, the broader history of Savannah. Check in to the Hotel Indigo Historic District just blocks from River Street and City Market and ideally situated for independent exploration. This evening, enjoy a leisurely self-guided walk through the Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens where a million lights shine during the holidays (weather permitting). Gaze at the white and gold lit Formal Garden, the endlessly glittering sparkles along Crapemyrtle Allee and the herds of twinkling reindeer in the historic Bamboo Grove.
Fri, Nov 30: Spend the morning at leisure. In the afternoon, board the Old Town Trolley for a narrated tour of historic Savannah, with Southern Christmas heritage discussed along the way. Savannah boasts over 1,700 restored buildings, each with its own story to tell. Travel back to the Civil War era at the Green-Meldrim House, which once served as General Sherman’s headquarters, and see the beautiful Mercer-Williams House, where the controversial events described in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil played out. Take a guided tour of the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace, home to the founder of Girl Scouts of the USA. See unique architectural features, including elaborately carved millwork and the impressive curved staircase and learn details of this remarkable woman. Tour the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, beautifully decorated for Christmas, and see the historically noteworthy architecture and gorgeous stained-glass windows. The remainder of the day is free to explore on your own. Enjoy Christmas carolers, visit with Father Christmas and sample holiday treats in the shops around City Market, decorated with hundreds of lights and luminaria, and take in the music, food booths and artists along River Street during First Friday Fireworks. Sat, Dec 1: Spend the day exploring and shopping at leisure. This evening enjoy dinner at the River House Seafood Restaurant followed by a performance at the Historic Savannah Theatre.
