Thu, Nov 30: Fly to Savannah, Georgia. Fri, Dec 1: Spend the morning at leisure. In the afternoon, board the Old Town Trolley for a narrated tour of historic Savannah, with Southern Christmas heritage discussed along the way. Savannah boasts over 1,700 restored buildings, each with its own story to tell. Travel back to the Civil War era at the Green-Meldrim House, which once served as General Sherman’s headquarters, and see the beautiful Mercer-Williams House, where the controversial events described in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil played out. Take a guided tour of the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace, home to the founder of Girl Scouts of the USA. See unique architectural features, including elaborately carved millwork and the impressive curved staircase and learn details of this remarkable woman. Tour the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, beautifully decorated for Christmas, and see the historically noteworthy architecture and gorgeous stained-glass windows. The remainder of the day is free to explore on your own. Enjoy Christmas carolers, visit with Father Christmas and sample holiday treats in the shops around City Market, decorated with hundreds of lights and luminaria, and take in the music, food booths and artists along River Street during First Friday Fireworks. Sat, Dec 2: Spend the day exploring and shopping at leisure. This evening travel to Dunham Farms, thirty riverfront acres located just outside of Savannah. Enjoy caroling and the lighting of the 24' Christmas tree then proceed down an avenue of lighted trees to the river where candles, representing holiday hopes and dreams, will be set free on the tide to illuminate the night. Back in the Live Oak Hall, enjoy a concert and a festive dinner followed by a wagon ride through the beautiful illuminated grounds. (B,D)
