Kentucky Spirit

Featuring the Creation Museum & Ark Encounter

June 14-16, 2018

Thu / Sat - 3 Days

Spirit, by definition, refers to the very essence or qualities that form the character of a person, nation or group. When you think of Kentucky – what comes to mind? Some would say horse races and bourbon, while others might say the rivers define the state as it claims three bodies of water as its directional borders and numerous navigable rivers within. Then there is the thriving bluegrass music, folk art and culture. Most recently, the introduction of the Creation Museum and the Ark Encounter add a spirit of faith and family. Visit these two inspirational attractions in addition to Newport and Berea and take a glimpse into the soul of our neighboring state.

Itinerary Hotels

Thu, Jun 14: Depart Indianapolis for Petersburg, Kentucky to visit the Creation Museum. In the beginning, God created…..and now the pages of the Bible vividly come to life in this state-of-the-art museum. Journey from the dawn of creation and throughout biblical history to the present day with stunning exhibits! Then, step outside and find yourself surrounded by botanical gardens, a petting zoo, a zip line course and more. The museum is impressive and a delight for one and all to see. Enjoy an included sandwich lunch at your leisure during the visit. Next, head to Newport for an overnight stay on the riverfront and a delightful dinner cruise. Board the River Queen—tastefully decorated and impeccably preserved, she is full of riverboat-era charm. Following the meal; take a dance with your partner, step out on deck to breathe in the night air or visit the covered third deck which offers a great view of the city as well as a bar and gift shop. Fri, Jun 15: Today travel south to continue the trek into biblical history at the Ark Encounter, featuring a full-size Noah’s Ark built according to the dimensions given in the Bible. Spanning 510 feet long, 85 feet wide and 51 feet high, this modern engineering marvel amazes visitors young and old! A buffet lunch is included with the group during the visit. Later, continue to Berea where the blue grass of Kentucky meets the rolling hills of Appalachia. Check in to the Historic Boone Tavern Hotel, in its second century of providing guests with the pinnacle of southern hospitality and charm. Meander down the street to encounter craft galleries, coffee shops, a fudge factory and a woodworking shop. Regroup this evening at the hotel for an included four-course dinner with fellow travelers. Sat, Jun 16: Berea College was the first interracial and coeducational college in the South and is different from most colleges in that it is the only one of America’s top colleges that awards every enrolled student a no-tuition promise. The college generates funds on endowment income, donations and financial aid to support the students but in turn, all students are required to work a minimum of 10 hours per week in approved jobs on campus and in the community. A common quote is that the college offers the “best education that money can’t buy.” Notable alumni of the college includes John Bennett Fenn, the 2002 recipient of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Tour the beautiful 140 acre campus and end at the Kentucky Artisan Center to see local artist’s work on display and available for purchase! Have lunch on your own in the café during your free time here. Continue on to visit Old Friends Retired Thoroughbred Farm in Georgetown and learn about this “living history museum of horse racing” featuring rescued and retired horses. Listen to stories of victory and strife in the lives of some of the residents, such as Kentucky Derby and Preakness champions Silver Charm and War Emblem. Return to Indianapolis in the evening with a dinner stop en route. (B)
