Savannah at Christmastime

Dressed for the Holidays

November 30-December 3, 2017

WAIT LIST ONLY

Thu / Sun - 4 Days

Dressed in her holiday best, Savannah evokes old-world Christmas charm. Boasting the country’s largest National Historic Landmark area, the city is home to restored mansions clustered amid 22 park-like squares, the Bonaventure Cemetery, made famous by the bestselling book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, the nine-block brick concourse of River Street, and a bustling City Market – all decorated for the season.

In addition to several tours and holiday themed activities, you’ll have time to explore the city on your own and to enjoy city events. You’ll want to check out City Market Holiday Open House where Christmas carolers serenaded as you stroll in the flickering light of over 500 luminaria, and First Friday Fireworks and River Street Fun.

Itinerary

Thu, Nov 30: Fly to Savannah, Georgia. See the understated taste of an authentic early 19th century holiday season on a tour of the Isaiah Davenport House, and discover how the household celebrated Christmas and New Year’s in the 1820s. Check into the Hotel Indigo Historic District just blocks from River Street and City Market and ideally situated for independent exploration. Enjoy dinner at the River House Seafood Restaurant followed by a performance at the Historic Savannah Theatre. The theatre is transformed into a perfect holiday picture, with singing, dancing and memories of Christmas favorites. (Meals: D)

Fri, Dec 1: Spend the morning at leisure. In the afternoon, board the Old Town Trolley for a narrated tour of historic Savannah, with Southern Christmas heritage discussed along the way. Savannah boasts over 1,700 restored buildings, each with its own story to tell. Travel back to the Civil War era at the Green-Meldrim House, which once served as General Sherman’s headquarters, and see the beautiful Mercer-Williams House, where the controversial events described in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil played out. Take a guided tour of the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace, home to the founder of Girl Scouts of the USA. See unique architectural features, including elaborately carved millwork and the impressive curved staircase and learn details of this remarkable woman. Tour the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, beautifully decorated for Christmas, and see the historically noteworthy architecture and gorgeous stained-glass windows. The remainder of the day is free to explore on your own. Enjoy Christmas carolers, visit with Father Christmas and sample holiday treats in the shops around City Market, decorated with hundreds of lights and luminaria, and take in the music, food booths and artists along River Street during First Friday Fireworks. (B)

Sat, Dec 2: Spend the day exploring and shopping at leisure. This evening travel to Dunham Farms, thirty riverfront acres located just outside of Savannah. Enjoy caroling and the lighting of the 24' Christmas tree then proceed down an avenue of lighted trees to the river where candles, representing holiday hopes and dreams, will be set free on the tide to illuminate the night. Back in the Live Oak Hall, enjoy a concert and a festive dinner followed by a wagon ride through the beautiful illuminated grounds. (B,D)

Sun, Dec 3: Transfer to the airport and fly home. (B)
