Fri / Sat - 9 Days

If your idea of a Caribbean cruise doesn’t include glitzy entertainment, guest lecturers, a casino or elevators, then a Star Clippers cruise is the perfect trip for you! The only bells and whistles are literally bells and whistles. Set sail in style aboard the Star Flyer, a four-masted, fully rigged tall ship with 36,000 square feet of sail (and a diesel engine when winds are calm or entering ports). And unlike the huge cruise ships that sail the Caribbean, the Star Flyer can call at the out-of-the-way ports and smaller islands, which only yachts this size can explore. The daily itinerary is planned in advance but actual arrival and departure times can vary due to the whim of the winds.

Cruising this way is enticing for sailing connoisseurs — and anyone who wants to visit remote, unspoiled Caribbean islands. The ship sets anchor each morning in a new port and you can disembark to explore, swim from a beach or remain onboard to relax. The ports are alive with distinct island culture and treasures, from volcanoes and colonial towns to coral reefs and perfect beaches — all wrapped together equal unspoiled tropical paradises. Skip from island to island, falling under the spell of their beauty and aura. And take in each island’s unique charm.

The Star Flyer recreates the golden age of tall-masted clipper ships that are powered by winds and currents. But that doesn’t mean that you’ll feel crowded onboard. The ship carries just 170 guests, all in luxurious style that recalls the glory of sailing the high seas of a century before, yet the ship has state-of-the-art navigation systems. On board, enjoy a relaxed atmosphere, friendly crew, delightful cuisine and chatting with other guests. Choose to join the captain on the always-open bridge to take the helm for a little while or just lie by the upper deck pool with a good book from their open library. At the end of your cruise you’ll walk away relaxed and rested.

Itinerary

Fri, Feb 23: Fly to St. Maarten and transfer to a hotel for one night.

Sat, Feb 24: Board the Star Flyer on the Dutch side of the island in Phillipsburg, St. Maarten.

Sun, Feb 25: Road Bay, Anguilla. Immerse yourself in sun, sand and water on the island of Anguilla. Thirty-three white powder sand beaches and tranquil, transparent waters are uncrowded and unspoiled. Swim, sail and snorkel just a few feet off shore. Shop in art galleries, designer boutiques or wander through the authentic local art and craft shops.

Mon, Feb 26: Virgin Gorda, B.V.I. Take an optional excursion to swim or soak at the “Baths”, Virgin Gorda's unique water grottos formed eons ago by ancient lava flows. Huge boulders lie scattered around the natural pools, which are delightful for swimming or soaking. Virgin Gorda is also home to Little Dix Bay, the Bitter End Yacht Club, some excellent beaches, and the best sailing around.

Tue, Feb 27: Virgin Gorda, B.V.I. (a.m.) and Norman Island, B.V.I (p.m.). Aye, me hearties! Explore the real ‘Treasure Island’ that inspired Robert Louis Stevenson to write his great adventure story. Norman Island does have a documented history of pirate booty being buried on the island. The island has long been a private preserve and little has been disturbed since Stevenson’s time. Why not hop in a Zodiac and explore the old caves where real hidden treasure was said to have been discovered? In the evening overnight at Soper’s Hole, Tortola where there are also several favorite ‘watering holes', beloved by crews of visiting yachts, where the local gossip flows as freely as the rum.

Wed, Feb 28: Soper’s Hole, Tortola (a.m.) and Jost Van Dyke, B.V.I. (p.m.). Soper's Hole is where ‘laid back' is a jealously cultivated way of life. You might choose to visit the nearby ruins of 17th century Dutch Fort Recovery. Once the hideaway of a Dutch pirate of the same name, Jost Van Dyke welcomes visitors with first-rate hiking trails and the best coral beaches in the British Virgin Islands. Maybe you’d just like to relax with a drink at Foxy’s beachside bar, one of the world’s best yachting bars.

Thu, Mar 1: Basseterre, St. Kitts (a.m.) and beach (p.m.). St. Kitts’ was the first successful colony in the British West Indies. St. Kitts is known as the “Gibraltar of the Caribbean” as it appears to dominate the Southern Sea when you stand at the top of Brimstone Hill. Shop in colorful Basseterre, play golf and tour old plantation houses. Or, if you’re feeling adventurous, take a brisk hike through the rainforest. Enjoy the beach in the afternoon.

Fri, Mar 2: Gustavia, St. Barts. In its elegant little capital of Gustavia, French joie de vivre is tempered by Swedish spic-and-span neatness. The rugged landscape discouraged crops but the natural harbor made it a trade and supply center. Today, diversions include duty-free shopping in exquisite boutiques, beautiful beaches, excellent dining, watersports and people-watching.

Sat, Mar 3: Arrive Phillipsburg, St. Maarten, disembark and fly home.
