San Antonio Getaway

With Fredericksburg and the LBJ Ranch

November 13-17, 2018

Tue / Sat - 5 Days

Relax Texas style when you settle into your River Walk hotel on a fun San Antonio getaway! Historic missions, River Walk restaurants and shops, Spanish architecture and a beautiful river centerpiece make this a truly remarkable city worth venturing to time and again.

An after-hours tour at the Alamo gives you an exclusive evening at the historic mission, including a personalized tour of the Alamo church, the Shrine of Texas Liberty, and the Long Barrack Museum—one of the oldest buildings in San Antonio. The legendary Alamo began as a Spanish mission in 1724 and later became a Spanish military stronghold and the site of the Battle of the Alamo in 1836. Explore charming Fredericksburg, named for Prince Frederick of Prussia, nestled in the Hill Country and rich with German heritage, and see the birthplace of the 36th President of the United States, Lyndon B. Johnson. Cruise along the Paseo del Rio (River Walk) that runs through downtown San Antonio, and immerse yourself in the laid-back atmosphere of this fascinating and historic Texas city.

Tue, Nov 13: Fly to San Antonio, Texas. Check in to your hotel, located directly on the Paseo del Rio (River Walk), a public park and network of walkways along the banks of the San Antonio River lined by restaurants, bars and shops. Get acquainted with the city and learn about its architecture and culture on a relaxing narrated boat cruise along the beautiful Paseo del Rio, one of Texas’s most prized attractions. Enjoy the evening at leisure.

Wed, Nov 14: The day begins with narrated city tour aboard a double decker bus. See the Spanish Governor's Palace, La Villita Historic Arts Village, San Fernando Cathedral and Hemisfair Park — the site of the 1968 World’s Fair. Explore the city further on your own with a hop-on/hop-off trolley pass with stops including Mission Concepcion, Mission San Jose and El Mercado, the Mexican Marketplace. This evening after the crowds have left, take a private after-hours tour of the Alamo. The Alamo played a critical role in the Texas Revolution and people worldwide continue to “Remember the Alamo” as a heroic struggle against impossible odds — a place where men made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom. Round out the day with dinner at the Colonial Room Restaurant located in the historic Menger Hotel, which opened in 1859. In addition to hosting generations of San Antonio’s most elaborate balls and society parties, the restaurant has welcomed United States Presidents Ulysses S. Grant and William McKinley, in addition to Robert E. Lee, General George Patton and Oscar Wilde. (B,D)

Thu, Nov 15: The day is at leisure to discover more of San Antonio on your own. With unlimited access to the hop-on/hop-off trolley, you can further explore your favorite stops or discover new attractions. (B)

Fri, Nov 16: Journey to the heart of Hill Country to the German settlement of Fredericksburg, with time to independently explore the quaint shops of the historic Main Shopping District. Travel to Stonewall to visit the LBJ Ranch, the birthplace of the 36th President of the United States, Lyndon B. Johnson. On a tour of the ranch view the “Texas White House” and learn about living in the Texas Hill Country. (B)
