Holiday Getaway: French Lick, Indiana

December 13-15, 2018

Thu / Sat - 3 Days

Escape from the everyday and wrap yourself in elegance at the French Lick Springs Resort, where the rich history and elaborate architecture of the resort’s two grand hotels are amplified during the holidays, and the trails around the resort grounds twinkle with a half-million lights. Built more than a century ago and once called the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” the West Baden Springs Hotel is a dazzling sight, from the glowing 40-foot Christmas tree in the atrium to the majestic dome spanning 200 feet above. French Lick Springs Hotel is loaded with charming holiday displays including Santa’s village, a reindeer barn and one of the Midwest’s largest gingerbread houses.

The French Lick Springs and West Baden Springs hotels were the iconic symbols of great economic achievement for rural southern Indiana, which became a famed vacation and gathering place for wealthy and prominent society members. Today, they offer a fascinating window into the grand hotel era of the early 20th century and the tradition of “taking the waters.”

See Irving Berlin’s Holiday Inn at the Derby Dinner Theater and Christmas Treasures at Abbeydell Hall. Making a holiday garland and having lunch at Stream Cliff Herb Farm tie this delightful holiday getaway into the perfect package.

Thu, Dec 13: Depart Indianapolis via motorcoach for Louisville, Kentucky. At the Derby Dinner Theater enjoy lunch and a matinee performance of Holiday Inn. Based on the romantic holiday classic film, this joyous musical features thrilling dance numbers and a hit parade of Irving Berlin songs. Continue on to French Lick, Indiana and check in to your atrium view room at the West Baden Springs Hotel. Relax and enjoy the evening at leisure. (Meal: Lunch)

Fri, Dec 14: Following breakfast at the hotel, discover its captivating history on a guided tour of the property. Find out why West Baden was renowned for Sprudel Water, and the interesting effect it had on guests, and learn about the mysterious Angel Room high above the atrium. You’ll also hear about the movers and shakers who came to make deals, gamble and “take the waters” in the early 20th century. Later in the day tour the French Lick Springs Hotel and hear its amazing history, from the creation of tomato juice in 1917 to the infamous Derby Weekend Raid of 1949 when gambling became suddenly taboo. In your free time explore the hotels, shop the quaint stores, try your luck at the casino or just relax and bask in the holiday spirit. This evening, enjoy dinner and the musical production Christmas Treasures at Abbeydell Hall, located on a 20-acre estate and former home of Larry Bird, a basketball legend who grew up in French Lick. Sat, Dec 15: Check out of the hotel and transfer to Stream Cliff Herb Farm. Have fun making a holiday garland and savor lunch in the farm’s restaurant, Twig & Sprigs Tearoom. There will be time to shop and enjoy wine tasting in the farm’s winery, too. Return to Indianapolis early evening. (B,L)
