Sitting on a bluff of the Mississippi river, this small town offers over 300 years of architecture, history, and living legacies for you to explore and to soak in the spirit of antebellum past. You’ll find Georgian, Neo-classical, and Greek Revival style plantation homes and mansions. Because this area didn’t experience much damage during the war, you can tour these personally owned homes adorned with elegant marble mantles and intricate archways all furnished with period antiques and outstanding original family pieces. Heavenly gardens bursting with beautiful flowers and trees are the perfect place to take a leisurely stroll. Experience southern history and culture while enjoying live performances and a progressive dinner that tantalizes your taste buds. Not only will you tour these homes, but you actually stay at an early 19th century antebellum mansion in Natchez at the Monmouth Historic Inn, a National Historic Landmark, set in 26 acres of manicured gardens. You’ll visit Vicksburg National Military Park where the Union Army finally forced the surrender of the Confederates on July 4, 1863. Cap off the tour with an overnight stay at impressive Nottoway Plantation in nearby Baton Rouge, complete with a one of a kind farewell dinner and southern hospitality.

Many of the historic homes on this tour require stairs to enter and are not handicapped accessible. Climbing stairs, walking, and standing for periods of time will be required to tour the homes and/or grounds.

Note: At Monmouth Historic Inn, accommodations will be located throughout the property. There are no elevators and there is walking from the main house to your accommodations. Every room has its own unique charm and views of the manicured grounds. No children under age 10 are permitted as overnight guests. At Nottoway Plantation & Resort, accommodations will be located throughout the property, not in the main house, and walking from the main house is necessary.


Sun, Mar 24: Arrive into Baton Rouge and make our way to Natchez. Check into Monmouth for three nights in this historic, Greek Revival inn. Originally built in 1818 and fully renovated in 1978 to its 1830’s period, the Monmouth Historic Inn’s grand columns invite you in to antebellum south. After getting acquainted with the property, enjoy true southern cuisine at a Welcome Dinner at Monmouth and see a spring pilgrimage production at Little Natchez Theatre this evening. Will it be an antebellum romantic mystery or a rollicking musical? Regardless, these well-loved plays and musicals are always a hit this time of year. (D)

Mon, Mar 25: After a hearty, southern breakfast, head to Frogmore Plantationin the morning. Visit Delta Music Museum where bluegrass, gospel, blues, and rockabilly are carefully preserved and celebrated. Your free time allows you to peruse downtown Natchez and find a tasty place to have a quick lunch and shop or linger for lunch in 19th Century elegance at the Carriage House Restaurant at Stanton Hall. Afterwards, we’ll make our way to Longwood, the largest octagonal home in the US and unfinished mansion built for Haller Nutt and his family. Due to the beginning of the civil war, the mansion was never completed. Return to the hotel for rest or a stroll in the gardens before a traditional Progressive dinner between three prestigious homes where opulence and art surround you while enjoying delectable cuisine at Linden, Towers, and Choctaw homes. Tue, Mar 26: Depart for Vicksburg Military Park in the morning, tour the park with a guide, and have free time for lunch and shopping on your own in town. Return to Natchez to relax at the hotel or have more free time in town. This evening. See Southern Road to Freedom, a stirring tribute to the African-American experience in Natchez with the award winning Holy Family Catholic Church Choir. (B)

Wed, Mar 27: Start your day by heading to the hills of St. Francisville, Louisiana’s English countryside.

Walk through shops, galleries, historic churches, and cemeteries – all downtown. Don’t forget to stop for a bite to eat – where you can choose from po boys to white linen table cloths. Check into Nottoway Plantation & Resort this afternoon and take a tour of the largest remaining antebellum mansion in the South. Relax and enjoy the grounds until we meet up as a group for a fantastic farewell dinner. (B,D)

Thu, Mar 28: Enjoy a leisurely morning at the plantation, take a walk in the garden, or feast your eyes on the mighty Mississippi river and scenery from your rocking chair on the grand balcony. Check out and return home. (B)
