Sun, May 12: Fly to San Francisco, California. Transfer to Monterey and enjoy a Welcome Lunch before exploring the Monterey Bay Aquarium, where more than 35,000 creatures representing over 550 species fill 34 major galleries. On a private VIP tour, an expert guide takes you through the most popular exhibits and exclusive behind the scene areas. Learn how to care for a jelly, what it takes to make a home for a shark, and how they grow a living kelp forest. Mon, May 13: Today, discover the cultural and natural history of the area with a local guide. Take the 17-Mile Drive past Cannery Row, immortalized by John Steinbeck, to Pacific Grove with its beautiful Victorian architecture. See the legendary golf course at Pebble Beach, situated along the rocky Pacific shoreline and visit Carmel-by-the-Sea. The rest of the day is free to explore Monterey’s Fisherman’s Wharf, Cannery Row, unique shops and galleries, and historic sites on your own. (B)

Tue, May 14: Drive down the Pacific Coast Highway, a twisting, cliff-hugging route along the coast, to Hearst Castle in San Simeon. Now a National Historic Landmark, the castle was built on a 40,000 acre ranch by newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst. Watch the construction and history of the Castle come to life on a five-story screen with breathtaking original cinematography combined with vintage clips and stills from the 1920s and 30s. Then travel back in time and experience what it was like to be a guest at the castle as you tour the opulent social rooms including the Assembly Room, Refectory, Billiard Room, Theater, Gardens, Neptune Pool, and Roman Pool. Return to Monterey for an evening at your leisure. (B)

Wed, May 15: Check out of the hotel and depart San Francisco. Explore the Lands End Lookout Visitor Center and learn the story of San Francisco’s development to provide city dwellers with outdoor recreation. Enjoy lunch at the renowned Cliff House, part of the Sutro Historic Landscape District and the crown jewel of the largest urban national park in the United States. Acquired in 1977 by Golden Gate National Recreation Area, the Cliff House has had many lives since it first opened in 1863. Perched over the Pacific above rocks populated by lounging seals, this San Francisco landmark offers stunning views and a unique perspective to the city. Then take a cruise under both the Golden Gate Bridge and the Bay Bridge, and learn details about the building of the bridges and the geology of the bay. Sail around Alcatraz Island and past the Transamerica Pyramid, Palace of Fine Arts, and the iconic Ferry Building, and view the entire San Francisco cityscape while listening to details of the city’s rich cultural history. Thu, May 16: Today is free to explore the city on your own. From your ideally situated hotel you can grab a ride on a cable car, visit Chinatown or Ghirardelli Square, tour one of the many museums or Golden Gate Park, or wander Fisherman’s Wharf.

Fri, May 17: Transfer to the San Francisco airport and fly home.
