Itinerary

Sun, Jul 28: Fly from Indianapolis

Mon, Jul 29: Everyone has an image of Amsterdam, The Netherlands. For some, it’s small boats gliding on the canals, and locals riding their bikes everywhere; and for others, it’s gabled buildings leaning, seemingly precariously, over cobbled streets and cozy taverns. Still others imagine tulips in bloom and the colors, both muted and vibrant, of the paintings Vermeer, Van Gogh and Rembrandt. All images are true and even more beguiling when experienced in person. Sit a spell in a convivial cafe, explore world-class museums and feel the significance of a unique history. Narrow streets and great manses tell the story not only in images but with the aroma of appeltaart and a feeling of warmth from the amiable locals. The ship will overnight in Amsterdam tonight.

Tue, Jul 30: Explore Amsterdam on your own or sign up for a Crystal excursion, but regardless, do not pass up the chance to see the sights this city has to offer.

Wed, Jul 31: Zeebrugge, Belgium is a patchwork of small farms, picturesque rivers and natural lakes. It is dotted with ancient cathedrals and wonderful museums with awe-inspiring art. This small town located on the western side of Belgium, dates back to the beginning of the Christian calendar. A crossroad in the English Channel for centuries, it is the gateway to Flanders, whose Golden Age heritage resides in three historic cities: Ghent, Antwerp and Bruges. In this region, museums proudly display the glories of the old Flemish masters, from Van Dyck to Rubens. The summertime is a delight showcasing colorful flower-filled window boxes and the graceful arcs of windmills.

Thu, Aug 1: On the Seine’s estuary lies the pretty port of Honfleur, France*. Glorious, historic houses elbow one another for position on the photogenic waterway, as do restaurants and galleries. The wealth of cultural sights and attractions delight its many visitors. Deauville, the nearby seaside resort, is both posh and quaint with its celebrity and royal pedigree. Added cachet comes from its renowned racetrack and horse breeding history — a French version of Lexington, Kentucky. Take an excursion to see the vertical cliffs of Etretat and Yport, natural wonders that inspired artists Boudin, Courbet, and Monet or gain insights on a tour of the D-Day beaches and see Pointe du Hoc, where German forces deployed concrete bunkers and gun pits to keep the allies at bay. The beauty goes on in this stretch of the Calvados region, rich with the history of William the Conqueror and the source of apple brandy. The ship will overnight in port. (B,L,D)

Fri, Aug 2: If you missed something yesterday, today gives a second chance to see more of Honfleur or nearby villages. Sail away in the late afternoon.

Sat, Aug 3: Charming Guernsey, one of the British Isles in the English Channel is a mere 25 square miles in size, but offers a whole host of enticing visitor attractions. Although geographically closer to France, it has remained staunchly British through the ages. Today, its diverse culture reflects the best of both worlds. Pastel-colored houses rise layer upon layer behind St. Peter Port, the island’s picturesque main town. Beyond, you discover a wealth of activities centering around goldsmiths, silversmiths, wood carvers and clockmakers. (B,L,D)

Sun, Aug 4: Spend the day cruising the Coast of France, and while on board one of the most award-winning ships, the day can be designed as you wish! Pamper yourself at the Feng-Shui-inspired Crystal Spa, take a walk around the Promenade Deck, learn how to translate your vacation photos into a movie at a Cinematic Arts Digital Filmmaking class, or learn about art, history, and destinations around the world through the Crystal Visions Enrichment Program. Sneak away to watch a recently-released movie in the Hollywood Theatre, shop the boutiques, or simply lounge poolside. (B,L,D)

Mon, Aug 5: Bordeaux, France* was at one time France’s richest community and largest port. It is second only to Paris as the country’s most densely populated city. Today, it is best-known for its glorious châteaux, mouth-watering cuisine and incomparable wines and is surrounded by the world’s most famous vineyards including Médoc, St-Emilion, Pomerol, Graves and Sauternes. This world-renowned wine capital is bound to please even the most discerning bon vivant. Spend the next two nights in port to maximize your options to explore this region on your own or via an optional excursion with Crystal. (B,L,D)

Tue, Aug 6: Another day beckons you ashore in Bordeaux for more unforgettable experiences. (B,L,D)

Wed, Aug 7: Wake up to a leisurely morning before departing Bordeaux, then set sail for Le Verdon in the afternoon. A contrast to the lush countryside found inland, the Atlantic coast offers its own kind of beauty with its crashing waves, long stretches of beach and conifer forests. Resort towns dot the coastline; one such place is Le Verdon, and in its harbor stands the oldest lighthouse in France, the Cordouan lighthouse. A short distance away is the seaside resort of Soulac, the “Pearl of the Silver Coast.” Its morning market, pedestrian-friendly streets and seaside shops and cafes give the village a sense of joie de vivre. (B,L,D)

Thu. Aug 8: Saint-Jean-de-Luz. This fishing port on the Basque coast is a gem, sparkling with old-world charm. Venture into the town center and feel like you’ve stepped back into the Middle Ages, as historic Basque and its Moorish architecture presides over narrow, cobblestone lanes. There’s plenty to explore, at it’s also home to the Church of St. John, where Louis XIV married Marie Thérèse of Spain. Incidentally, it was at that wedding that the legendary pastry chef Adam delighted guests with Basque macarons, a heartier cousin to the traditional French macaron; a visit to Saint Jean-de-Luz would not be complete without sampling this tasty confection. (B,L,D)

Fri, Aug 9: Home of the newly-erected Guggenheim Museum, the bustling city of Bilbao, Spain epitomizes the merger of modernity and history. The gateway to the Cantabrico Sea from the plateau of Castilla, Bilbao has flourished from the middle ages as a busy port, and a major exporter of the metals found in surrounding areas. Today, the city flourishes with a vital exuberance, as modern architects erect new buildings next to 19th-century ones. (B,L,D)

Sat, Aug 10: Cruising the Atlantic Ocean. (B,L,D)

Sun, Aug 11: Cosmopolitan Lisbon, Portugal was the center of the world’s last great colonial empire and still nostalgically reveres its imperial past. Although located on the Atlantic coast, Lisbon has the soul of a Mediterranean city with Moorish castles, pastel and white buildings, orange-tiled roofs and luminous blue skies. Set amid the hills and valleys of the northern shore of the River Tagus, it is one of the loveliest capitals in the world. (B,L,D)

Mon, Aug 12: Disembark in the morning and transfer to the airport to fly home. (B)
