It’s time to get off the beaten path – just around the corner in our neighboring state of Ohio. Discover what the rural rolling hills, Hollywood, and Pulitzer Prize winning books have in common. Travel through the scenic Mohican Memorial State Forest and stay at Landoll’s Mohican Castle, featured on the FOX network’s Hotel Hell with Gordon Ramsay, now a divinely unique, revived castle in the woods.

While on the tour, visit a Victorian era museum, cut through the backroads of Holmes county, meet a local Amish artisan, dine on some Amish comfort food, and see a variety show at the Amish Country Theater. Explore Franklin Park conservatory to admire their Chihuly glass artwork installations and enjoy a culinary class to create a Spanish tapas lunch! Embark on a narrative journey at the new National Veterans Memorial and Museum in Columbus, focused on the people, the soldier, sailor, airman, Marine, Coastguardsman and their families – from answering the call to service to life after the military. Taste and sip your way through a variety of wonderful surprises in central Ohio.

Wed, July 10: Board the motorcoach bound for Lucas, Ohio and discover Malabar Farms, the former home of prolific writer, Louis Bromfield and where Bogey and Bacall were married in 1945. Cagney and other famous friends visited as well, but more recently Hollywood graced the grounds again when some of the scenes from the movie Shawshank Redemption were filmed on parts of the farm. Take a historical tour of the Big House, and learn about this author’s Pulitzer Prize, his elite parties, and green farming practices. Then continue through the Mohican Memorial State Forest on the way to Landoll’s Mohican Castle — opening in 2002, it fulfilled the dreams of the Landoll family, and was then recovered from a fire before it was featured on FOX’s Hotel Hell with Gordon Ramsay in 2016. Fully restored and renovated, this beautiful woodsy retreat is the perfect place to enjoy peace and tranquility. The rooms are each uniquely decorated and designed, all different with their own personality. Or choose one of the spacious, brand new stable rooms, which just opened in July 2018. Enjoy a spa treatment, or have some leisure time to explore prior to enjoying dinner at The Copper Mug restaurant on castle grounds. Following the meal, gather near the fire pit for a glass of wine and gourmet s’mores with bacon, potato chips, cookies and more! (Meals: Lunch, Dinner)

Thu, July 11: Depart for nearby Millersburg and step into the elegant Victorian House Museum and Holmes County Historical Society, featured on HGTV’s Victorian America. Explore the interior to absorb the history of this wonderful home. See the outskirts of town as well, home to many Amish family farms and businesses. Visit a local artisan, enjoy some time to poke around in the local shops for homemade goodies and crafts before a family style meal in an Amish home. This evening, cap off the day with an award-winning variety show at the Amish Country Theater — featuring live music, hilarious characters, an acclaimed ventriloquist, and much more! Return to your castle after the show. (B,D)

Fri, July 12: Depart for Columbus Ohio’s Franklin Park Conservatory to admire thenew installations of Chihuly glass artwork infused with indoor and outdoor garden displays. Mingle with the group at a private culinary workshop to prepare five classic Spanish tapas for lunch and sip on refreshing fruit sangria. Next, embark on a narrative journey at the new National Veterans Memorial and Museum, focused on the soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines, Coastguardsmen and their families – from answering the call to service to life after the military. After a thought-provoking visit, board the motorcoach and head back to Indianapolis. (B,L)
