Belle of Louisville
Built in 1914 and now a National Historic Landmark, the Steamer Belle of Louisville cruises the Ohio River from Waterfront Park. Originally named the Idelwild and built in Pittsburgh, the steamboat operated as a passenger ferry on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers and also hauled cargo such as cotton and lumber. During World War II the steamboat was outfitted with special equipment to push oil barges along the river but also served as a floating USO nightclub for troops stationed at military bases along the Mississippi. Restored in 1962 and now owned and operated by the Louisville Metro Government, the renamed Belle of Louisville is the oldest operating river steamboat in American history. Highlights: entertainment • concession stand & bar • dance floor • stage • indoor & outdoor seating.
