Overview

There are few adventures more thrilling than sailing aboard a tall ship and anyone who has experienced it can tell you — there’s this moment when you feel the wind catching the sails and suddenly, you’re flying!  The powerful sensation of being one with nature takes over and leaves you exhilarated, humbled, and awed all at once. On board, the Star Flyer tall ship, discover off-the-beaten-path islands wrapped in myth and mystery as the wind carries you from one gorgeous destination to the next — all the while enjoying casual elegance, comfortable accommodations, and cuisine designed to indulge your senses. It’s not surprising that the movie Mama Mia was filmed on several of these islands — you’ll recognize the brilliant blue waters and sky and dazzling whitewashed buildings.

Begin in Athens, where you can almost hear the voices of Plato, Socrates, and Aristotle arguing about who was the greatest philosopher. Explore the sleepy beach town of Dikili and the classic Greek fishing harbor at Limnos. Stop in Skiathos, with its abundance of beautiful beaches and trendy boutiques. Unwind in Skopelos, home to the majority of the filming sites of Mamma Mia and the picture-perfect chapel of Agios Ioannis Kastri, perched atop a cliff overlooking the sea, and the sight of Sophie’s wedding. Visit Poros with its pastel-hued houses stacked up against the hillside. This fantastic adventure intertwines ancient myth and history with hidden gems and the unspoiled beauty of the Aegean.

Itinerary

Thu, Aug 13: Fly from Indianapolis to Athens, Greece.

Fri, Aug 14: Arrive in Athens and join a local guide for a narrated tour of this ancient city, free time for lunch in historic Plaka, and a visit to the Acropolis & New Acropolis Museum. Overnight in a hotel in Athens. (Meal: Dinner)

Sat, Aug 15: Enjoy free time in Athens prior to embarkation from the nearby port of Piraeus in the evening. Board the Star Flyer and enjoy dinner with fellow travelers. (B,D)

Sun, Aug 16: At sea. While sailing the Aegean Sea today, familiarize yourself with the ship. Choose to relax on a sun lounger, cool off in one of the pools, or discover a relaxing lounge or peaceful library. The adventurous may climb the rigging or even have a go at steering the ship. (B,L,D)

Mon, Aug 17: Welcome to Dikili, Turkey, a summer resort town of the coast of the Izmir Province. This sleepy little beach town is authentically Turkish. Explore the harbor, lined with open-air restaurants and shops offering local specialties. Nearby, Bergama is worth a visit for its two main monuments: the Acropolis (918 ft tall) and the Asklepion. (B,L,D)

Tue, Aug 18: Explore Limnos, Greece. Legend has it that it was Zeus who hurled Hephaestus from Mt. Olympus to land on Limnos, leaving the god of metalworking with a permanent limp. Perhaps he was nursed to health by the excellent red and white wines grown on Limnos volcanic soil. The town of Myrina sits under the winding white ramparts of the Kastro, built in 1186. But even earlier ruins, one of the most ancient sites in Greece, lie in nearby Poliochni. (B,L,D)

Wed, Aug 19: Skiathos is known as the most sophisticated of the Sporades. No wonder, as it abounds with trendy shops and fabulous beaches. Go a few blocks inland and you’ll find charming flower-decked houses and gardens overflowing with fruit trees. (B,L,D)

Thu, Aug 20: A verdant island blessed with olive, almond, and fruit trees, Skopelos should look familiar as it is where much of Mamma Mia was filmed. Visit the beaches, where much of the film was shot, as well as the chapel where the exterior of Sophia’s wedding was filmed. (B,L,D)

Fri, Aug 21: It’s barely a hop, skip, and a jump from the Argolid Peninsula to the island of Poros. Greece’s naval academy is here, and visitors can hear the cadets’ marching band every morning. The views from the Temple of Poseidon are truly beautiful. Take a water taxi to Galatas for excursions to the fragrant lemon groves of Lemonodasos, or venture inland to ancient Troezen or Epidaurus. (B,L,D)

Sat, Aug 22: Disembark in Athens and fly home, arriving the same day. (B)
