NEW TRIP!

Overview

Golden savannah grasslands, wide open rivers — gathering places for hippos and elephants — emerald green tropical rainforests, and the azure waters of the Indian and Atlantic oceans surround you as you experience the raw, natural scenery and the warm-hearts of the people in Zimbabwe, Botswana, and South Africa.

Begin in Cape Town, the dynamic “Mother City.” Immerse yourself in history, city life, wine tasting, and the vast scenery of ocean and mountains. Tour the Atlantic seaboard, dotted with millionaire’s mansions, a penguin habitat, and the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve. Take a step back in time and travel by luxury rail to Pretoria, South Africa. Witness the mesmerizing scenery of prairie lands, villages, forests, and spectacular mountain ranges passing by. Stops along the way include the city of Kimberley to see the famous diamond mine known as the “Big Hole” and the Diamond Mine Museum, and a historic village in Matjiesfontein.

Visit Victoria Falls, one of the seven natural wonders of the world. A cruise down the Zambezi River not only offers exceptional dining and incredible sunset viewing, but the opportunity to see hippos, elephants, crocodiles, and native birds.

Discover Africa’s “big-five” and abundant wildlife on exciting game drives in Chobe National Park, home to one of the largest groups of elephants on the continent, and on a private game reserve near Kruger National Park. Luxury accommodations, raw natural beauty, and cultural and historical experiences are all woven together to form this magical trip of a lifetime.

Tue, Sep 15: Fly overnight from Indianapolis to Cape Town, South Africa.

Wed, Sep 16: Arrive in Cape Town, South Africa. Transfer to the five-star Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel where you’ll spend the next three nights. Follow in the footsteps of Winston Churchill, John Lennon, and Nelson Mandela by staying at this iconic retreat. Find relaxation, old-world charm, and pure luxury in the private gardens, cozy fireplaces, four-poster beds, elegant service, and delectable cuisine.

Thu, Sep 17: This morning, take a trip on the Table Mountain Cableway to witness some of the best views of Cape Town, Robben Island, and the Peninsula from this flat-topped mountain. Head to the waterfront for lunch on your own before boarding a boat for a cruise to Robben Island, a World Heritage Site and museum. Once on Robben Island itself, a tour is guided by a former political prisoner, offering unique and incomparable insights into the island’s history. And no trip to South Africa would be complete without visiting the vineyards where some of the best wines in the world are created. Discover the fertile Constantia Valley, and Groot Constantia wine estate for a tour and tastings of their award-winning wines. Finish with a group dinner at the winery before heading back to the hotel for the evening. (Meals: Breakfast, Dinner)

Fri, Sep 18: A full day of amazing sightseeing awaits in and around the Cape Peninsula. Visit laid-back Sea Point, drive down millionaire’s mile, and enjoy views of the famous Atlantic Seaboard — where the mountains meet the water. From Hout Bay, take a boat trip to Seal Island before heading south to The Point for a funicular ride to see the phenomenon where the Atlantic meets the Indian Ocean. Devour a seafood lunch at Two Oceans Restaurant and then it’s on to Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve for an incredible view of rugged cliffs, rocks, beaches, and wildlife. Return to town following the eastern coastline of the peninsula via Millers Point to Boulders Beach, where you have the opportunity to see penguins. Return to the hotel and spend the evening at your leisure. (B,L)

Sat, Sep 19: After a leisurely breakfast, board the historic and luxurious Rovos Rail for a three-day, two-night journey. Step aboard the classic remodeled coaches — restored to mint condition, and settle into your private accommodations. Since its beginnings in 1989, Rovos Rail has earned an international reputation for its truly topnotch savoir-faire. Sit back as some of the most stunning scenery imaginable unfolds before you. Ride through the enchanting mountains of the Hex River Valley, flower fields, and vineyards before disembarking at Matjiesfontein for an opportunity to stroll through this historic village. Then join fellow travelers in the dining car to enjoy impeccable service, five-star cuisine, and a selection of South Africa’s finest wines. Experience the extravagance of rail travel that pays homage to a simpler, more elegant era encompassing the ageless grace and high romance of African exploration. Continue your overnight ride through the Karoo. (B,L,D)

Sun, Sep 20: Enjoy breakfast on board and explore the observation and lounge cars. Disembark in Kimberley for a tour of the area and learn about the diamond history here; both at the Diamond Mine Museum and the Big Hole — a hand-dug, giant hole created from diamond mining. Enjoy lunch, afternoon tea, and dinner while passing through unforgettable landscapes. (B,L,D)

Mon, Sep 21: Travel northeast through the goldfields of the Witwatersrand before the train reaches the journey’s end at the station in Pretoria. Transfer to Lesedi Cultural Village. Set amid rocky hills and bush fields, this reinvented native village offers visitors a chance to encounter people of Zulu, Xhosa, Pedi, Ndebele, and Basotho origin. Meet real people (not impersonators), enter their homes, and listen to stories about their individual cultures and rituals of daily life. Enjoy lunch before departing for Johannesburg where you’ll experience a city highlights tour before checking in to your hotel in Sandton City, which is linked to Nelson Mandela Square and is one of the most fashionable destinations in Johannesburg, offering exclusive shops and boutiques, as well as fine dining restaurants and sidewalk cafes. (B,L,D)

Tue, Sep 22: Fly to beautiful Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, an African paradise centered on the showpiece of the high falls. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the town plays host to myriad activities, and abundant natural life from wildlife and birds to rainforests and the Zambezi River. Check in to your hotel where lunch is served prior to touring the falls. Tonight, you’ll be treated with a sunset dinner cruise on the Zambezi River. Unforgettable scenery is paired with Zambezi gourmet cuisine, along with a chance to see local birds, hippos, crocodiles, and possibly elephants. (B,L,D)

Wed, Sep 23: Following an early morning light breakfast, depart for the Chobe National Park in Botswana for your first safari game drive of the tour. Stop for an included lunch before returning to your safari — this time via a cruise on the Chobe River! As the Chobe is home to the highest concentration of elephants on the continent, there’s a good chance you will encounter elephants playing and interacting at the river. Throughout the park’s 4,000 square feet of tranquil scenery, herds of the Cape buffalo reside, as well as the Puku Antelope, and many beautiful birds. Return to the hotel later this afternoon and freshen up for the group’s dinner, a cultural experience at a special restaurant tucked away in the Gusu Forest. Savor excellent Zimbabwean cuisine and traditional entertainment. (B,L,D)

Thu, Sep 24: The morning is at leisure in Victoria Falls prior to an afternoon flight to Johannesburg. Check in for an overnight stay at an airport hotel. Dinner is included this evening. (B,D)

Fri, Sep 25: Return to the airport to fly to Hoedspruit, South Africa and upon arrival, transfer to Kapama River Lodge Private Game Reserve, set against the backdrop of the majestic Drakensberg Mountains. Check in for two nights at this tranquil retreat, one of the finest, luxury safari lodges near Kruger National Park. Enjoy lunch at the lodge followed by a game drive in the private reserve, home to Africa’s “big five” as well as 40 other mammal species and 350 different types of birds. Return to the lodge for dinner with the group. (B,L,D)

Sat, Sep 26: Set off on another first-rate wildlife experience on an early morning game drive. Return to the tranquility of the lodge for a hearty breakfast, then perhaps indulge in a spa treatment or partake in the lodge’s amenities during your leisure time. Embark on a late afternoon game drive before a delightful Farewell Dinner. Propose a toast to new friends and lasting memories before spending your last night under the African sky. (B,L,D)
