Wed, Oct 14: Depart Indianapolis via motorcoach for an enjoyable drive across western Indiana and Illinois to Galena. Check in to your hotel, the historic DeSoto House Hotel, and enjoy free time before a private dinner. (Meal: Dinner)

Thu, Oct 15: After breakfast in the hotel, visit the Galena/Jo Daviess County History Museum followed by a guided sightseeing tour of the town. End at the authentic 1897 blacksmith’s shop and see them forge tools and equipment from over 100 years ago. Stop at the Ulysses S. Grant home, where Grant and his family settled before the Civil War. Visit a local vineyard and sample the award-winning wine. Spend the evening strolling Main Street or relaxing at the hotel. (B,L)

Fri, Oct 16: Check out of the hotel and depart for a tour of Belvedere Mansion and Gardens. The 22-room Italianate home was built in 1857 by businessman Joseph Russell Jones. Jones became friends with Ulysses Grant, who had settled in Galena to work in his father’s business before the start of the Civil War. The home’s gardens combine formal country gardens with quiet, intimate respites. Return to Indianapolis. (B,L)
