Itinerary
Thu, June 24: Depart Indianapolis via motorcoach for an enjoyable drive across western Indiana and Illinois to Galena. Upon arrival, visit the Galena/Jo Daviess County History Museum followed by a guided sightseeing tour of the town. End at the authentic 1897 blacksmith’s shop and see them forge tools and equipment from over 100 years ago. Check in to your hotel, the historic DeSoto House Hotel. (Meal: Dinner)
Fri, June 25: After breakfast in the hotel, visit Belvedere Mansion and Gardens. The 22-room Italianate home was built in 1857 by businessman Joseph Russell Jones. Jones became friends with Ulysses Grant, who had settled in Galena to work in his father’s business before the start of the Civil War. The home’s gardens combine formal country displays with quiet, intimate respites. Stop at the Ulysses S. Grant home, where Grant and his family settled before the Civil War. Visit a local vineyard and sample the award-winning wine, and have the evening on your own to stroll Main Street or relaxing at the hotel. (B,L)
Sat, June 26: Check out of the hotel and depart for Moline for a narrated luncheon cruise the Celebration Belle. The excursion will take in some of the historical sights of the area. Cruise by the Rock Island Arsenal, located on a 946-acre island, and Lock and Dam #15 with the largest roller dam in the world. The Captain will reveal historical facts about Chief Black Hawk, as well as the first railroad bridge that crossed the Mississippi River and the young Illinois attorney who defended it in a court battle—and later became this country’s 16th President! Savor a delicious lunch, then step out onto the open upper deck, sit back, and enjoy the scenery. Stop off on the third deck for those last-minute souvenirs at the gift shop. After a fun filled tour, return to Indianapolis. (B,L)
