Ambergris Caye, Belize
Simple Pleasures on the Western Coast of the Caribbean
Life on Ambergris Caye is laidback and casual, and shoes are optional. From beautiful azure waters and white sand beaches to ancient Mayan ruins, tropical rainforests, and hundreds of limestone caves, there is something here for everyone.
Ramon’s Village Resort is one of the oldest resorts in San Pedro, opened in 1982, and built to resemble the tropical cottages you’d expect to find on Bora Bora or other destinations within French Polynesia. The resort has a freeform pool that is the focal point and hangout spot in the afternoons, as well as an idyllic stretch of beach with lounge chairs, perfect for a relaxing vacation.
Belize also has the second largest coral reef in the world—only the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Australia is larger—and this reef has made the little town of San Pedro the dive and water sports capital of Central America. Snorkel or dive along the reef to see exotic fish and beautiful corals. Explore the island, go sports fishing, or play in the waters in a kayak or sailboat. Or head for a day trip to the mainland to tour one of the Mayan ruins, go cave tubing, or zipline across the rainforest canopy. Stay in a modern thatched-roof cabana at Ramon’s Village Resort, an oasis on the white coral sandy beach, surrounded by coconut palms, colorful bougainvillea, and hibiscus.
A passport is required to travel to this destination and must be valid for at least six months after your return.
This itinerary includes activities where moderate walking, possibly on uneven terrain, is required.
Sat, Feb 5: Depart Indianapolis for Belize City, Belize. Upon arrival, take the short flight to San Pedro on Ambergris Caye and check in to the beachside Ramon’s Village Resort for the next seven nights. Conveniently located right in San Pedro, the main town on Ambergris Caye, the resort is a short walk from the airstrip on San Pedro, or a quick ride on a golf cart! You’ll immediately be transported to vacation mode the moment you walk down the resort’s main path, surrounded by Royal Palms, the vibrant colors and fragrances of the local flora. Kick back and enjoy the atmosphere of this laid back, seaside oasis.
Sun, Feb 6-Fri, Feb 11: Each morning, enjoy breakfast at the hotel and spend your days at leisure doing as you please. The resort’s founder, Ramon Nunez, who passed away in 2018, was the first certified scuba diver in Belize, and the chosen one to accompany Jacques Cousteau to explore the Blue Hole. Scuba and snorkeling excursions can be arranged from the resort, as well as a variety of other optional activities such as sunset sailing cruises, glass bottom boat rides and snorkeling with manatees. Spend your days on Ambergris Caye or schedule a tour to the mainland to visit Mayan ruins—all can be booked from the comfort of the resort. (Meals: Breakfast)
