Sun, Jul 11: Depart Indianapolis for Charlottesville, Virginia. Once you arrive, relax and enjoy a welcome dinner with your fellow travelers. (Meals: Dinner)
Mon, Jul 12: Begin your presidential home trek through Virginia with a visit to Highland, the official residence of the fifth president, James Monroe, who served from 1799 to 1823. Discover the fascinating life of a tireless public servant who fought and bled in the American Revolution and successfully negotiated the Louisiana Purchase. Afterwards travel a few miles down the road to the historic 18th-century Michie Tavern for lunch featuring an authentic Southern-style buffet. Continue to Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello for a tour of the exquisite home and gardens of the third president of the United States. Learn about Jefferson’s pursuit of happiness through architecture, botany, philosophy, and family and hear the stories of the free and enslaved people who lived at Monticello. Return to the hotel and explore the restaurants on the historic pedestrian mall, right outside the hotel. (B,L)
Tue, Jul 13: Today, take in the stunning views of Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park. A local guide will narrate as you travel through the park and enjoy the beautiful scenery along the Blue Ridge Mountains. After lunch, continue to the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library & Museum and explore our 28th president’s early years and his eventful presidency, as well as suffrage, prohibition, and World War I. In the charming mountain town of Staunton, considered one of America’s great Main Streets, meander through the quaint shops and restaurants before returning to Charlottesville. (B,L)
Wed, Jul 14: This morning, tour the University of Virginia, located in Charlottesville. Thomas Jefferson founded UVA with a vision to establish an academic village close to his Monticello estate, today it is the only university in the United States designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Enjoy a guided tasting at a local winery. Thomas Jefferson dreamed of grape growing and winemaking when he built Monticello, and in the 1970’s a new generation of winemakers began to make dreams reality—today Charlottesville and Albemarle County are home to more than 40 wineries! Conclude the home tours with a visit to James Madison’s Montpelier. Madison, the fourth president of the United States, is considered the Father of the Constitution, and this will be evident during your tour of the home.
