Overview

The rugged beauty of New Mexico’s northern mountains and high deserts inspired artists such as Georgia O’Keeffe, Joseph Henry Sharp, and Victor Higgins—a Hoosier—to paint and live there. This trip to the Southwest captures the majesty and charm of their favorite cities, Santa Fe, Abiquiu and Taos. Tour museums and historic adobe churches, gallery hop and eat delicious local cuisine while staying at two award-winning resorts. As Santa Fe’s oldest hotel, La Fonda on the Plaza, has set the standard for excellence since the early 1900s. Located in the historic heart of the city, across from the 1887 St. Francis Cathedral Basilica, this former “Harvey House” has long been the destination for discriminating travelers. The legendary Santa Fe Trail ends at La Fonda, signaling to travelers that wherever their journey began, they’ve finally arrived. 

Taos, tucked into the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, has attracted artists since the late 1800s because of its beautiful setting and dramatic light. Today, it’s still full of artists, galleries, and travelers who want to enjoy the beautiful surroundings and the relaxed, creative atmosphere. There is an interesting mixture of three cultures: Native American, Hispanic, and American. End in Abiquiu, at Ghost Ranch, of which O’Keeffe famously said, “It’s the most wonderful place you can imagine.”

Sun, May 9: Fly to Albuquerque, New Mexico. Stop Old Town Albuquerque to explore the main plaza and have lunch on your own before departing for Santa Fe. Check in to your home for the next three-nights, La Fonda on the Plaza, centrally located on the city’s historic plaza! Relax in the luxurious atmosphere and take in the unique Southwestern art collection. Visit the famous Loretto Chapel—with a mysterious floating staircase. Enjoy a Welcome Dinner with your fellow travelers. (Meal: Dinner)

Mon, May 10: Following breakfast at the hotel transfer to the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum for a visit. O’Keeffe’s paintings reflected her love of the New Mexican high desert—animal bones, dramatic cliffs, and badlands. Other paintings at the museum include some of her large-scale flowers and New York cityscapes as well as some of her contemporaries. From the museum, explore Santa Fe on a guided tour. Begin with a historic walking tour in the Plaza, before continuing by motorcoach down the Old Santa Fe Trail, passing museum hill, Canyon Road galleries, and New Mexico’s capitol building. Spend the rest of the day at your leisure exploring more of Santa Fe. (B)

Tue, May 11: Depart this morning for an excursion to Taos, a charming mountain town celebrated for its rich Native American heritage, vibrant arts scene, and breathtaking high-desert landscapes. Visit San Francisco de Asis Catholic Misson Church, one of the most photographed and painted churches in America, famously depicted by Georgia O’Keeffe and Ansel Adams. Continue to Taos Pueblo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in North America. Enjoy free time to explore the historic Taos Plaza, where unique boutiques, galleries, and local cafés offer a taste of the town’s distinctive Southwestern character. Before returning to Santa Fe, stop at the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge, where the river runs 650 feet below the bridge in a spectacular, immense, and steep rock canyon. You’ll have the remainder of the evening at leisure in Santa Fe. (B)

Wed, May 12: Check out of the hotel and depart for Rancho de Chimayo, a small village that is famous for the weavings of the Ortega and Trujillo families. It is also known as the home of El Santuario de Chimayo, an early 19th-century church that has been the destination of countless pilgrims who attribute it with miraculous powers of healing. Following lunch, continue to Abiquiu and visit the Georgia O’Keeffe Welcome Center before checking in for two-nights at the Abiquiu Inn. All guests stay in casitas and suites spread throughout landscaped grounds featuring sculpture gardens, patios, fountains, and mountain views. Dinner is included at the hotel this evening. (B,L,D)

Thu, May 13: This morning, tour Georgia O’Keeffe’s home and studio where you’ll gain insight into the life and creative process of one of America’s most celebrated artists. Continue to Ghost Ranch, made famous by O’Keeffe and where she painted many of her best-known landscapes. Along the way, stop to admire the striking red rock cliffs, colorful mesas, and expansive desert vistas, taking in the fresh air, natural beauty, and unique perspectives that captivated the artist for decades. Your guide will provide fascinating stories of the artist’s life as well as the history of Ghost Ranch. This evening, gather with your fellow travelers to celebrate your journey at a memorable Farewell Dinner. (B,L,D)
