Mon, Jun 21: After breakfast take off on a guided sightseeing tour of Reykjavik, which means “smoky bay,” in the Icelandic language. According to Norse legend, in 874 AD the first settler who arrived in the area saw smoke rising from the bay—a feat later explained by the abundance of geothermal activity. Known as the world’s northernmost capital, Reykjavik is a small, but lively city famed for its surrounding natural beauty. Discover its charming cafés, bold and vibrant architecture, lively art scene, and many natural wonders, including its iconic geothermal pools. Afterwards embark on a thrilling whale watching boat tour. This excursion brings the opportunity to observe a myriad of marine life including whales and dolphins. Thu, Jun 24: This morning embark on the classic Golden Circle tour to see some of Iceland’s most stunning sights. See the Geysir geothermal area where the Strokkur geyser shoots a column of water up to 98 feet into the air every four to eight minutes in a thrilling display of nature’s forces. Enjoy lunch before continuing to Gullfoss, a waterfall which tumbles and plunges into a crevice some 105 feet deep. Cap off the tour with a phenomenal visit to Thingvellir National Park, where you can walk through the parting of the American and Eurasian tectonic plates, pulling apart with a gap increase of nearly an inch per year. Fri, Jun 25: Depart the city and head south to the Katla Ice Cave, a unique, year-round natural ice cave famous for its striking layers of bright blue ice and black volcanic ash. Don provided gear to explore the cave on a guided tour—with plenty of time for pictures! Sat, Jun 26: After breakfast a short drive followed by a ferry ride will take you to the enchanting Westman Islands. Explore the surroundings—volcanic landscapes, colorful fishing villages, dramatic sea cliffs, and abundant puffins await. The summer nesting season brings Atlantic puffins to the island in enormous numbers filling the steep cliffs and rocky slopes as they nest and dart over the sea in search of fish. Visit the Eldheimar Museum, with exhibits focusing on the 1973 volcanic eruption in Vestmannaeyjar, one of Iceland’s largest natural disasters. Return by ferry to the mainland in the afternoon and transfer back to the hotel. (B,L,D)
Sun, Jun 27: Breakfast is included at the hotel before setting out for another adventure! Explore Iceland’s southern coast, featuring more stunning waterfalls, black sand beaches, and culminating in a live lava show. See Seljalandsfoss, one of Iceland’s most iconic waterfalls. Skógafoss waterfall creates a powerful and awe-inspiring display, made even more beautiful by the glittering, misty rainbows often appearing on sunny days. Climb a staircase to a viewing platform for a panoramic view, experiencing the roaring water and shimmering curtain dancing off the falls. Reynisfjara beach features black sand, hexagonal basalt columns, and sea stacks, created by the Atlantic Ocean’s waves breaking down volcanic rock over centuries. A short stop is also made in the village of Vik. Overnight at a hotel in Keflavik, conveniently located close to the airport. (B,L,D)
