Springfield also served as Lincoln’s home for 24 years, earning the moniker, the “Land of Lincoln.” Discover the city where Abraham Lincoln spent his pivotal adult years—from his early career as a lawyer, his marriage to Mary Todd and raising his sons, his senatorial ambitions and emergence as a Republican leader, his grave warning to the nation in his “House Divided” speech given in the eve of the Civil War, and finally, his election as the 16th president of the United States. In life, Lincoln never returned to Springfield after leaving for the White House in 1861; instead, his beloved former home serves as his final resting place after his tragic assassination in 1865. Springfield has carefully preserved its Lincoln treasures to share the history and legacy of this great man.
