Overview

The shores of Lake Ontario sparkle with World-class theatre in blissful Niagara wine country! Journey to Buffalo, New York for an overnight stay and a private, evening tour of the extraordinary Martin House designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

Cross into Canada and follow the scenic Niagara Parkway until it reaches the charming town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, located at the mouth of the river on Lake Ontario. It was Canada’s first capital until 1867 and boasts tree-lined streets adorning clusters of early Canadian homes—and prestigious hotels! And for over six decades it has been home to the summer Shaw Festival, celebrating the life and spirit of George Bernard Shaw by creating theatre that is as entertaining and provocative as Shaw himself. The festival’s beginnings can be traced to 1962 when Brian Doherty and Calvin Rand staged a summertime “Salute to Shaw” at the Court House Theatre. Queen Elizabeth II, Indira Gandhi, and Pierre Elliot Trudeau were among those who attended performances at the Shaw Festival Theatre during its inaugural season in 1973.

See three featured performances, discover the region’s wine culture at a local vineyard. Breathe in the fragrant air and tranquility of the Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens, and see thundering Niagara Falls from several vantage points, including a dinner facing the falls!

Mon, Jun 22: Depart by motorcoach in the morning and travel to Buffalo, New York, stopping along the way for rest stops and a lunch break. Check in for an overnight stay at your downtown hotel, where dinner will be served before a private evening tour at Frank Lloyd Wright’s Martin House. Experience an exclusive, docent-led tour where you’ll get to explore all the spaces on the standard daily tour but with the unique opportunity to enjoy special access to the Martins’ home office, guest suite of rooms, staff dining room, and the ballroom in the lower level. (Meals: Dinner)

Tue, Jun 23: After breakfast, depart for Niagara Falls State Park to spend some time viewing the falls from this vantage point. Experience the Cave of the Winds on Goat Island—a Gorge Walk that takes visitors within feet of Bridal Veil Falls. After passing through The World Changed Here Pavilion, board an elevator that transports you 75 feet down into Niagara Gorge to a series of wooden walkways that lead to the decks right next to the falls. After an exhilarating experience, ascend to the walkways that lead you to lunch options, souvenir shops, and other viewing points where you will enjoy leisure time. Next, cross into Canada (passport required) and on to the lovely town of Niagara-on-the-Lake. Check in for your four-night stay at the historic Prince of Wales Hotel on flower-filled Queen Street—steps away from vibrant boutiques, theatres and restaurants. Rejoin the group for dinner at the hotel this evening. (B,D)

Wed, Jun 24: This morning, an optional adventure awaits—a helicopter ride around Niagara Falls! After the ride, return to Niagara-on-the-Lake to have lunch on your own and to see your first Shaw Festival Show. Following the show, visit the Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens, first commissioned in 1885 and now home to the Niagara Parks School of Horticulture. The stunning grounds serve not only as a training ground for skilled gardeners, nature enthusiasts and future horticulturists, but beautiful public parkland for all to enjoy. Stroll the manicured paths and enjoy the blooming gardens! While here, step into the Butterfly Conservatory, an indoor rain forest with more than 2,000 resident butterflies, many of which will delicately flock to you as you wander through the lush habitat. Learn about the different types of butterflies and enjoy the tropical atmosphere. Next, top off the day with dinner facing the falls at Table Rock House. Marvel at the fireworks bursting with color over the Falls before returning to the hotel. (B,D)

Thu, Jun 25: Enjoy a leisurely morning, or visit historic Fort George before seeing another play in the afternoon. After the show, feel the thundering roar of the Falls with a Voyage to the Falls boat tour on a state-of-the-art catamaran, with up close views of the magnificent Great Gorge, American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and Horseshoe Falls. Your evening is at leisure. (B)

Fri, Jun 26: Spend some time at leisure today to take in another show, relax with a spa treatment at the hotel, or go searching for those last-minute souvenirs. Later this afternoon, visit Peller Estates Winery to learn the process of making ice wine, then tour the vineyards and barrel cellar. Along the way, step inside an igloo-like lounge for a tasting, set against a glistening backdrop of unique ice objects including sculptures, an ice lounge chair, and even an ice chandelier! Enjoy a lovely dinner before the final show of the trip. (B,D)
